What is Micellar Water & Is it For You?Wednesday, April 06, 2016
It's not a cleanser. It's not a toner; nor is it a face-wash.
Micellar water is garnering a lot buzz because it could be the wonder product to streamline your skincare routine. Quick and easy to use, a micellar cleanser is a lifesaver for on-the-go beauty and late nights.
The French skincare product removes makeup and cleanses the skin, without the need for rinsing. Micellar waters have been widely available in French pharmacies for many years, and gained a cult following internationally as skincare enthusiasts, makeup artists and models shared their experiences about them through the digital grapevine.
Micellar water or eau micellaire takes its name from micelles; tiny round balls of cleansing molecules that float in soft water. When you apply the product to your skin, the cleansing agents come into contact with sebum and dirt on your face, allowing them to be swept away quickly and efficiently.
Micellar cleansing water uses very gentle but effective cleansing agents. There is no tingling or tightening effect, and it’s powerful enough to remove eye makeup, so there is no need for a separate makeup remover. The idea is that micelles are attracted to dirt and oil, so they are able to draw out impurities without drying out the skin.
Micellar water has been around since the days when people weren’t dealing with traditional or reliable plumbing and the water in France was really harsh on the skin. When using micellar water as a cleanser - you don't need to wash it off. Most formulas don’t require additional rinsing with water, which can further strip sensitive skin in colder months.
Is it Suitable for Your Skin?
Micellar cleansing water is especially suitable for all types of sensitive skin. There are many varieties available, including formulations for oily, dry or sensitive skins. I've got a friend who has combination-dry skin and struggles to find an effective but gentle cleanser. We are currently testing out Bioderma's Sebium H2O - Micelle Solution. It hasn't been a week yet but so far her skin is taking to the cleansing really well. There are a number of solutions to suit your budget and your skincare needs.
How Do You Use It?
The same way you use a toner. Soak a cotton disk with the solution and sweep it across your whole face. You don't have to skip the eye and lip area because the solution doesn't contain alcohol and won't damage the skin there. There is no need to rinse afterwards. After that apply a suitable serum or moisturiser to your skin.
